I am the M in STEM! MAA American Mathematics Competitions

Nominations Open: Edyth May Sliffe Awards

The Edyth May Sliffe Awards for Distinguished Mathematics Teaching in Middle School and High School are given annually to middle and high school mathematics teachers who have done outstanding work to motivate students in mathematics through participation in one of the MAA American Mathematics Competitions. This prestigious award is accompanied by a $500 stipend and recognition on the MAA website and social media. Award recipients also receive complimentary registration, housing, and travel expenses to MAA MathFest in Tampa, FL, from August 2 - 5, 2023.

Eligibility: Nominees may include any teacher who has administered the competitions, mentored students, or encouraged students to participate in AMC, but all nominees must be middle or high school teachers in either a public or private school. Teachers may apply on behalf of themselves or nominate a colleague.

Application: Please fill out the Edyth May Sliffe Nomination Form by July 15, 2022. Each nominee must have two letters of recommendation, one of which may be from the nominee. In place of two letters, we will also accept a single letter of recommendation written on behalf of the nominee signed by at least two individuals, neither of whom is the nominee. The letters may be submitted by the nominee’s colleague, supervisor, or community member to reflect how the nominee encourages, supports, and maintains their students’ enthusiasm for mathematics through the AMC.

We look forward to recognizing the dedication and efforts of teachers in the AMC.

On March 16 and 17, schools/Competition Managers received emails with their students' AIME scores and USA(J)MO qualifying students. Additional score reports were sent out the morning of Friday, March 18th to schools with USA(J)MO qualifying students. If you have not received an email and you believe you have students that should have qualified for the USA(J)MO, please email or call us immediately:  [email protected]    800-527-3690

Please refer to the table to see the USAMO and USAJMO cutoff scores.

Qualifier lists are below. If you are a qualifier not on the list, please email or call us immediately. We will add you to the list before the competition:  [email protected]  or  800-527-3690. Missing qualifiers are mostly students who took competitions at different locations without submitting a Change of Venue form or used different variations of their name during the competition.

2022 USAMO Qualifiers

2022 USAJMO Qualifiers

For those students who qualify based on their index scores:

USA(J)MO Day 1 must be administered on Tuesday, March 22 from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM ET.

USA(J)MO Day 2  must be administered on Wednesday, March 23 from 1:30 PM to 7:00 PM ET.

You must start before 2 pm ET to receive the full 4.5 hours of work time on the competition. The last hour of the competition window is reserved for uploading solutions.

Competition Managers must administer the USA(J)MO online for all of their qualifiers. Besides student accommodations requests, no additional forms need to be submitted at this time.

1.       This year there was a discrepancy in our data.  Initially, some schools and students that took the AIME II were missing from our final reports.  That error has now been corrected and the reason behind the data error is being investigated.

2.       Although, in the past, AIME I and II cut-offs have been similar, this year there is a gap between them.  This has resulted in inviting more than the typical number of students to the USA(J)MO. We do not plan to change the cut-offs this year, nor do we plan to un-invite any students.

3.       Inviting more students does not violate any MAA AMC policies.  All students that would have qualified in previous years (based on AIME I & II cut-off scores) were invited this year.

4.    The USA(J)MO will proceed March 22 & 23 as planned.  A thorough review of scores will take place prior to selecting students for MOP or other international teams (IMO, etc.).

  • Score reports for the AMC 8 will be emailed out by the end of March. This is beyond our stated 30-day turnaround. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  • AIME I & II score reports will be sent the week of March 14th and will include USA(J)MO qualifiers.

  • AIME II Problem #8: There are two acceptable answers for Problem #8.  Students will receive full credit for submitting an answer of “081” / "81" or “080” / "80".

As always, we appreciate your support of the program and your patience while we work behind the scenes to process our final competitions for the year.

Stay tuned for more details later this month. We strongly encourage students who are interested in this program to join our mailing list

ANNOUNCEMENT - AMC 10/12 Score Reports

Once the competition ended, score reports were processed in the AMC system, then an email was generated from the same system.  This year, we are experiencing delays in processing the score reports; we also received email bounce-backs when the score report emails were sent.  Our Service Center team is working diligently to resolve these problems. At this time, all score reports have been sent. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] with any additional questions or concerns.

You can also click here for AMC 10/12 A and B answers and click here to see the scores required to qualify for the AIME l.

We appreciate all that you do and in the midst of an already challenging year, we apologize for adding another challenge to your plate.

Congratulations to all AMC 10/12 participants. Thank you for joining us this cycle. Qualifying thresholds are below.

The AMC is continuing to provide two options this cycle: online administration and print administration. We strongly recommend, whether your students are physically and/or virtually attending school, they take the competition(s) online for greater ease and convenience. View policies here.

Only competition manager proctoring is allowed. Students will be proctored by their competition manager, either in-person or remotely, at the discretion of the competition manager. Remote proctoring requires the competition manager to monitor the student through a video conferencing software. Register here.

Announcement: Future USA Teams for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)

The MAA AMC Co-Directors reached an agreement with the IMO Team Leader in October 2020, that the IMO Team eligibility policy will require all team members to be USA citizens or USA permanent residents.  This change will be effective during the next full IMO team selection cycle.

Since the USA IMO Team selection process for IMO 2021 had already been announced (and the list of potential candidates had already been narrowed down to students who attended school in the USA and spent months preparing), it was decided at that time that this policy change will only become effective starting with the IMO 2022 team selection and onward. Please view the AMC Policies page for more student eligibility requirements.

In Response to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic

Dear Parents, Teachers, Students and all that support our Competitions Program,

We have received all of your calls, emails, and messages of support and are so thankful for such an engaged community. We understand the importance of this program and how hard the students have worked to study and prepare.

We ask for your patience as we work through options during this worldwide pandemic. The impact it is having on our school’s students and teachers is unprecedented. Our hope is that altering our competitions program supports the well-being of our students and our country during this time. We will provide an update as to the status of the 2020-2021 competition program in the coming weeks.

Above all, I hope that all students and teachers remain safe, and continue to follow the guidance from healthcare professionals within your community and at the state and federal levels.
